Dare we hope soon to see the end of Covid-19 restrictions and a long-term solution to managing this disease? That would be good news indeed but, please, let’s also keep the focus on provision of quality care for elderly and vulnerable people. Whilst there are known challenges in the health and care sector, there are many truly uplifting and inspirational stories too.
Home Instead Tavistock and Tamar Valley is proud to be part of the solution. We are rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission and are a Top 20 Care Provider in the South West. At Home Instead, our approach centres firmly on our clients and our whole team shares common values – best summarised as changing the face of ageing and bringing joy to our clients’ lives. We believe that most people prefer to remain at home for as long as possible, and we help to enable this through companionship and unrushed care.
We strongly recommend starting the care conversation early with your loved ones, even if this is not easy to do. A useful approach might include:
Listen – Is there anything your loved one is struggling with at home? How do they feel they are coping and is there any support they would like?
Talk – Chat about prolonging your loved one’s independence and how they can stay at home for longer doing what they enjoy.
Support – Explore what support is out there now or in the future to help your loved one stay at home for longer, including if something unexpected occurs?
We go far beyond a task oriented ‘tick list’. We have excellent relationships with local health professionals as well as life improving charities. For example, Lynn is also Chair of the Tavistock Dementia Alliance and a trustee of both the Tavistock Sensory Garden and Cycling Without Age West Devon and East Cornwall. We have campaigned successfully for a permanent specialist Admiral Nurse for our community as well as helped fundraising for the wonderful interactive projector installed at Tavistock Library.
Through these links and our wider network, we understand in detail what help and resources are available. We also actively campaign to shape policy and delivery of relevant services for elderly people in our community.
For readers considering working in care – yes, we are recruiting!
Our CAREGivers come from a diverse range of backgrounds and bring a wonderful variety of experience. Whether you have worked in care for several years or want to try something new, we have CAREGiving vacancies that will give you job satisfaction like no other. It is not necessary to have worked previously in care – we provide comprehensive training and actively nurture our staff.
Everyday our CAREGivers make a world of difference to the lives of elderly people. The needs of our clients vary hugely, so there is a vast range of roles and responsibilities amongst our team. Whether you’re helping clients get dressed or taking them to a coffee morning, it’s incredibly rewarding knowing that you’re giving the care and companionship crucial to somebody’s wellbeing.
Career development opportunities include health and social care apprenticeships, level 2 – 5 diplomas and other specialist training. It is perfectly possible to start as a CAREGiver and move subsequently to managerial roles.
