I’M really glad that I went to an unusual event in Tavistock on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 27.

Tavistock Library welcomed a small group of actors, Librarian Theatre, who put on ‘The Book’s the Thing’, a version of ‘Hamlet’, not in the somewhat indigestible four-hour format of the full-length play but one cut down to the bare bones, so a mere one hour twenty minutes.

The four actors played the several parts between them with conviction, verve and clarity, in a simple but effective set depicting shelves of books.

The audience was small — only 12 —and I would urge people in Tavistock who like plays by small companies (so rare here) not to miss the next offering in the library by the same company, ‘A Christmas Carol’, also, in my humble opinion, a work ripe for editing.

Find them at www.librariantheatre. com where you can suggest works they might like to adapt and perform.
