Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one West

Plymstock Utd 7

Okehampton Argyle 0

BEFORE the match, Argyle manager Stuart Cann said his team needed shaking up after their poor performance last Saturday, but this result was not the shake-up he was looking for as Okehampton fell to their biggest ever Peninsula League defeat.

Cann left out Matt Sanders and Ben Ferguson and played Dale Chadwick and himself in midfield and early on the change seemed to be working as Argyle matched their opponents who are unbeaten in the league since September.

However, with only the hard working Ben Waters up front, Argyle only threatened occasionally and it was Plymstock who looked the most dangerous. Still the game was even and Argyle were unfortunate to fall behind after 20 minutes when a quick Plymstock counter-attack saw James Bass drive home from ten yards.

Five minutes later, the home side won a corner on the right and Argyle's defence were not able to deal with the high in-swinging cross which eventually went in off the unfortunate Okehampton captain James Williams. At this stage, Argyle were still in the game and producing some good moves but hard as Waters worked, he desperately needed a partner to lay the ball off to.

However, in the second half, Plymstock started to exploit space left open on the wings by the Okehampton midfield and having seen Argyle's difficulty with high balls into the box, the home side continued to fire these in.

The match was killed after 55 mintes when a high cross in from the right was mishandled by keeper Harry Geering under pressure and the loose ball slotted home by Bass. The goal was allowed to stand despite strong appeals from the Argyle defenders that Geering had been fouled as he tried to gather the ball.

The remaining goals all came in the last 20 minutes as Argyle crumbled. Jamie Pook was fortunate to score the fourth for Plymstock when his high cross eluded Geering and went straight into the net and shortly after, Dale Chadwick was unfortunate to chest the ball into his own net as Geering parried a shot straight at him.

With ten minutes left, a mix-up in the Argyle defence allowed James Yates to force the ball home from close range to make it 6-0.

To their credit, Okehampton continued to try to play football and a lovely move saw full back Corey Burns fire in a tremendous shot from the edge of the box which rebounded off the Plymstock goalpost. But it was Plymstock who were to have the last word as Bass completed his hat-trick with a fine strike deep into stoppage time.
