RETAINED firefighters are being sought in a number of Cornish locations, including Callington.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CRFS) is interested in people who want to put something back into the community and learn new skills.

CRFS is currently recruiting for on-call firefighters — people who live or work close to their local fire station.

There are currently more than 400 retained firefighters in Cornwall who are on stand-by ready to respond to fire, road accidents, flooding or other emergency situations.

CFRS is keen to receive applications from people all over Cornwall interested in developing a second career with the fire service, especially during the day. Callington and Liskeard are among the locations where recruits are most needed.

To become a retained firefighter you must be at least 17 years and 6 months old (as you must turn 18 years old before starting employment as a firefighter), be physically fit and live and/or work very close to your community fire station as you need to get to the station within four minutes of an alerter-call.
