I?WRITE in response to the ‘Cobbles Fixed’ article in the Times (October 22).
I felt it necessary to address the comments made by Devon County Councillor for Tavistock, Debo Sellis, regarding Tavistock’s unsafe cobbled crossings.
Many will recall two recent Times articles where my fellow WDBC Councillor for Tavistock North, John Sheldon and I had campaigned to highlight the problem with the unsafe crossings and called for their immediate repair after many pedestrians had been injured after tripping on the uneven cobbles.
Both Cllr Sheldon and I are now very pleased to see that the cobbles have finally been temporarily repaired, but look forward to a more permanent solution. However, we both consider the inference in Cllr Sellis’ comment in the Times article that if the councillors had attended the meeting they would have known when the repairs were taking place is wholly untrue, unnecessary and unhelpful.
I can categorically state that neither Cllr Sheldon nor I received any communication from DCC or Cllr Sellis inviting us to any such meeting to discuss the problem of the uneven cobbled crossings and how the issue could be resolved.
After several months of reporting and emailing to Devon County Council and the county councillor by members of the public and being frustrated by the prolonged inaction by county, Cllr Sheldon and I felt it necessary to take to social media to highlight the problem with the hope that DCC and Cllr Sellis might appreciate the seriousness of the situation and repairs would be quickly undertaken to avoid any further public injury.
The lack of communication is a shame, but, we sincerely trust that, in future, we are kept fully informed as to any matters impacting on Tavistock North residents which involve DCC.
It is our hope that we can establish a good bilateral working relationship with DCC in the future so that we can best represent the residents of Tavistock North.
Cllrs Jeff Moody and John Sheldon
