A NUMBER of children at Winkleigh Primary School have been awarded special arts awards from Trinity College, London.

Year 1 and Year 6 pupils work towards receiving an Arts Award each year — in order to achieve the awards children must discover the arts around them, find out about artists and their work and share their experiences with others.

They collect their arts experiences in an arts log as they go along, recording what they find and enjoy and at the end they gain a certificate from the established performing arts college.

A school spokesperson said: ‘There is a cost to helping the children gain an award and the Parent, Teacher and Friend Association (PFTA) have kindly helped out with this. We are an Artsmark Gold School and these awards help achieve and maintain this status.

‘We like the children to be inspired by a range of visiting artists and experience new art forms. Such opportunities help children grow their creative talents. When interviewing artists it is often their teachers who inspired them or taking part in school plays that motivated them to go on to have successful careers in the arts.

‘The older children in the thriving school choir are soon to experience a workshop with the London Community Gospel Choir at Exeter University.’
