CHILDREN from North Tawton Community Primary School had a visit from their local county and borough councillor recently.

Cllr James McInnes visited the school to tell pupils more about his role as a councillor for both Devon County and West Devon Borough Councils.

He explained his work as the county’s Cabinet member for children’s services and schools.

‘The children had the opportunity to ask him a range of questions including why he became interested in politics, how it feels to take part in an election and how to prepare yourself when facing difficult questions,’ said headteacher Nick Alford.

‘They were keen to know his views on Brexit and what he would think if Donald Trump ever became Prime Minister!’

The session ended with a discussion on the challenges facing young people in the coming years and the councillor’s wish for more young people to become involved in the political process.

‘This was a great opportunity for the children,’ added Mr Alford. ‘They asked some excellent questions and I hope that it may inspire them to take a keener interest in politics in the future. It was good to enrich our ongoing work around promoting fundamental British values, a key aspect of which is the democratic process.’
