WORK is due to start in the next few weeks on a new sixth-form centre for Okehampton College.

Contractors Morgan Sindall are converting what was Wardhayes care home on nearby Simmons Way into a light and spacious new sixth-form centre.

The building will be completely renovated and will include teaching space, private study spaces, common room and catering facilities.

Due to be completed by the spring of next year, it will also free up space in the main school building to allow the college to expand and provide places for 120 more pupils.

The £1.6-million refurbishment project is being designed and project managed by NPS South West on behalf of Devon County Council. 

Nigel Whelan, area director at Morgan Sindall, said: ‘We’re looking forward to getting underway with refurbishment works to the new Okehampton College sixth-form centre.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity for the college to expand and, once complete, will create a bright and spacious learning environment for students.’

‘Morgan Sindall is very well versed in delivering projects of this nature and we’re looking forward to working with Devon County Council, NPS South West and the college to create a state-of-the-art facility for students. 

Devon County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for schools, James McInnes, said: ‘Okehampton College is one of our most successful secondary schools and I am delighted that this project will mean more children will be able to benefit from an excellent education.

‘The new sixth-form centre is purpose-designed with appropriate facilities for older students.

‘It will free up accommodation in the main school building that will allow the college to expand and provide another 120 places. It is a real win-win development.’

NPS Project Manager Claire Walkey said: ‘We are delighted that this project is finally in construction.

‘Once complete the new facility will provide a bright and modern sixth-form learning hub which will be of great benefit to the staff and students of the college.’

Morgan Sindall is also currently building a second primary school for Okehampton, St James’ Church of England Primary School, north of Crediton Road.

The school will create 420 primary and nursery places, primarily serving the new housing development being built to the east of Okehampton.
