POLICE have issued advice to motorists using the roads as extreme weather conditions approach the South West.

With the remnants of the storm that brought serve blizzards to the USA on the way to Britain, police have warned motorists that the number of road traffic accidents, which could be avoided, often increase in poor weather.

A police spokesperson said: ’The following points may seem obvious but not everyone follows them:

’Give large vehicles space to manoeuvre and be aware that in high wind they may have trouble keeping straight, especially on duel carriageways and motorways.

’Leave an adequate gap to the vehicle in front. The general rule is two seconds gap when it is dry and double for wet weather.

’Now is a good time to check your lights and replace bulbs and wipers. If you can’t see or can’t be seen you are more of a danger on the road.

’Please do not use foglights as routine. They are often dazzling to other drivers in wet weather and are of no benefit to use unless it is foggy.

’If you are a cyclist please bare in mind that the poor weather makes you especially vulnerable and if possible, choose a safer route or use your car. It is very easy to be blown into the way of a passing motorist in high winds. If you do have to ride, please use plenty of high visibility clothing and good quality lights that will not be affected by the wet weather.’
