HATHERLEIGH Town Council has just completed a monumental task to two important and familiar memorials in the town.

With the help of a number of volunteers and local businesses the Morris Monument and the town's war memorial have been giving some much needed 'TLC.'

The monument, over looking Hatherleigh Moor, was in desperate need of re-pointing — a job that cost around £1,000, although work was done at discounted prices.

It was erected in honour of William Morris, a Hatherleigh man, who commanded the 17th Lancers and led the 'Charge of the Light Brigade'  against Russian guns at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854.

William Morris survived the carnage, although he later died in India, and his heroism was depicted with the monument at his home town — raised with monies by public subscription. However, because it was built from such funds nobody was liable for its upkeep so the town council decided to help with its restoration.

Borough and town councillor Dennis Bater said: 'A big thanks go to Ian Fishleigh, Chris Lock, Barkwill Builders, and Mr Scaffold, who have either given their time or worked at discount prices to make this possible. The town council is very grateful to them for helping the community at this time of restraint.'

At the same time, the war memorial in the town's graveyard has also had a facelift.?The base needed reinforcing, and cleaning and repair to the lettering was required — this work has also now been completed.
