THE fifth South Zeal Classic Car & Motorcycle Show took place in glorious sunshine last Saturday.
This event was a charity fundraiser organised by Simon Powell at The Oxenham Arms Hotel and this year saw both the greatest number of vehicles entered and spectators coming along.
Some £500 was raised for South Tawton Primary School and another £500 was raised for the Ukraine DEC Charities Appeal fund.
Seventy-one cars, trucks and vans and 41 motorcycles turned out along with many spectators. One obvious star of the show was the fully restored 1930’s Bedford ‘ride on top’ Fire Engine brought in by Allan Balsdon from BVS Okehampton.
Special thanks were expressed to Okehampton firefighter Mike Bourne for spending the whole day in his uniform rattling a collection bucket for Ukraine charities and David Lewis from Exeter Fire Service for coordinating it all.
At 11am, a flypast by an aircraft took place over the show with a lovely double wing wave as it passed over the showground organised by Richard Horner at Taw Green.
Vehicles ranged from the 1930s to future classic sports motorcycles. The first prize classic car went to a superb Ford Model A owned by Paul Smith.
First in the future classics was a bright orange Mazda MX5 30th anniversary special owned by Trevor and Denise Boyland.
Probably the most unusual car was the astonishing ‘Jagster’ — a roadgoing slingshot dragster capable of achieving 160 miles an hour in second gear with another three gears to go! This car owned by Tim Hands won the first prize in the ‘sports other’ class.
There was an astonishing turnout of classic and sports motorcycles from many local classic motorcycle owners but also the great Exeter Classic Motorcycle Club.
First prize in the classic motorcycles was a Moto Morini Corsarino owned by Bob Wiffen. Joint first was Bernard Endacotts BSA Bantam D1.
Thanks were expressed to Sarah Marvin and her team at South Tawton School for supporting this lovely village event and the marshals who directed traffic and got everyone parked and registered safely — Mark and Becca, Mark Lidster, Pip Lidster, Jim Reed, Kaz Searle, Daphne Powell Mike Errington, Liz Gold-Lewis, Ursula Radford, and Nick Maunder.
