A PROPOSAL for free car parking in Hatherleigh came under the spotlight during a meeting in the town recently.
The town's main car park is owned by West Devon Borough Council, and is running at a loss.
Hatherleigh Town Council would like to take over the day-to-day running of the car park, and make it free to use to decrease on-street parking in South Street and High Street. It is also hoped that free parking would attract more shoppers to the town.
The proposal was outlined by Hatherleigh town councillors Gary Bush and Liz Abell at a recent meeting of the West Devon car parking strategy group.
The group has stressed the need for more detailed investigations to take place, as well as wider public consultation.
