I READ last week's front page article on the future of Hatherleigh Market with more than just interest as I often visit Hatherleigh Market on a Tuesday, and when I was a farmer used the cattle market.

Hatherleigh Market is very important to the town.

That has been recognised in the West Devon Local Plan since 2005, which strongly supports its presence in the town.

West Devon Borough Council has recognised for some time that there are issues around the future of the market. The role of the council is to ensure that any redevelopment of the Market site enables Hatherleigh to continue as a vibrant market town.

West Devon is working with Hatherleigh Town Council on a community-led project called 'Plan - It'.

By using this process we can work with the community, the town council and any developers to make sure that we consider the needs of the whole town and give everybody the opportunity to shape the future of Hatherleigh.

Hatherleigh Market is a privately-owned business and whether it stays open in its current form or not, is a matter for the owners. I attended the exhibition which was held in July and the message was loud and clear. Hatherleigh residents want to retain a Tuesday Pannier Market.

I welcome residents getting involved in the development of their town.
