Okehampton Argyle 2

Plymstock Utd 2

THIS was a tremendous performance by Argyle against a Plymstock side who went top of the League as a result of this draw.

Okehampton were the better side on the day and were desperately unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the last minute.

Argyle were far faster out of the blocks and in their first attack, Luke Alden beat three defenders on the left and fired in a cross which the Plymstock defence did well to clear. Five minutes later, Alden's shot from the edge of the box came back off the visitors' post and Ben Waters' follow-up effort was cleared off the line. Argyle were dominating at this stage, but were rocked on 20 minutes when Plymstock won a corner on the right and James Yates' low corner eluded the Argyle defence and went through to Danny Murdoch, who made no mistake from close in. This signalled a better spell for Plymstock but Argyle fought their way back and were level eight minutes later. Ricky Wooldridge's right wing corner was flicked on by Ed Squire to Ben Waters who rifled the ball home from 17 yards.

The second half started off with Plymstock putting a lot of pressure on the Argyle defence as they put together their best spell of the match, and midway through the half, they took the lead again when a Yates corner from the right was headed home by Murdoch.

Okehampton came back with gusto and pinned the visitors back. A great move saw Steve Williams crash a 30 yard shot against the underside of the Plymstock cross bar and rebound into play.

Argyle replaced the injured Alden with forward Steve Madge and throwing caution to the wind, took off defender Corey Burns and replaced him with another forward Brad Ausden. Surging forward, Argyle rocked the Plymstock defence and with ten minutes left, Ben Waters was brought down in the penalty area. Up he stepped to fire home a perfect penalty kick and level the match.

It was all Argyle now and in the last minute, a corner from the left eluded the Plymstock keeper James Gill and, claimed Argyle, punched away by a defender, but the referee turned their appeals down.

In a great all round team performance, Ben Waters was Argyle's man of the match but special mention should also be given to defender Mark Burdus, making his first team debut this season, with a great display. Shane Monnox, James Williams and Corey Burns were all outstanding in the back four and Alex Wren and Ed Squire were the pick of midfield.

On Saturday Argyle are away to Penryn Athletic in the league, kick-off 3pm; in the Devon and Exeter division four Argyle seconds are at home to Thorverton, ko 3pm while in division eight Argyle thirds are away to Feniton thirds, 3pm.

The Argyle 200 Club winners for week 37 are 1, Liz Beer, with ticket no 120, £35; 2, S King, no 35, £10.
