I would like to express my disappointment and disquiet that Mary Tavy Parish Council decided to dispense with tradition by not lighting a beacon on Gibbet which is part of the national chain of fires, a tradition which has been carried on for generations.
In the past it has proved very popular, enjoyed by all ages and a wonderful social occasion.
Her Majesty the Queen lit the first beacon at Windsor and it would have been fitting for Mary Tavy to have shown our loyalty to a special lady on her 90th birthday to carry on the tradition that our ancestors started generations ago.
