Thursday, September 24:

186 cattle – flying trade.

The tremendous store cattle trade continues at Hatherleigh. This week saw a greater number of top quality cattle on offer and the packed ringside of buyers competed keenly for the stock.

Top call on the day was £1,095 for a superb Charolais x steer, 17 months old, belonging to S R and S M Crocker from Lewdown and purchased by Mr Byrne of Ashwater. Messrs Crocker also sold bunches of steers at £850.00 and £835.00.

A terrific consignment of 20 Charolais x steers and heifers was presented by R A and J Littlejohns, Peter Tavy with bunches of 15 months old steers selling at £1,065, £1,015, £1,025 and £1,000 and six heifers selling at £865.

Regular supporters E C Stanbury and Son of Inwardleigh once again travelled in with a top quality entry of Limousin x and British Blue x steers and heifers (12-16 months old) with Limousin x steers to £842, British Blue x steers to £808, Limousin x heifers to £860 and British Blue x heifers to £802.

Janet Lake of Petrockstowe sold two bunches of Limousin x steers 18 months old at £985 and £960, both purchased by Graham Kivell of Ashreigney.

Local farmers J Chisholm and Son, of Hatherleigh, presented a run of Limousin x steers and heifers 12 to 13 months old with their steers selling to £935 and heifers to £870.

Other top prices: Simmental x steers 17 months old £1,020 — F R and S Bown, Inwardleigh, Simmental x heifer 17 months old £860, F R and S Bown, Inwardleigh, Friesian steers 26 months old to £908 – C G Dunn, Winkleigh; Angus x steers 18 months old to £795 – D Rees-Douse, Exbourne.
