THREE pupils from Okehampton Primary School had a right royal day out when they met Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, at the Royal Cornwall Show last Thursday.
Year 5 pupils Meda Walker, Toby Read and Liv Walker shook hands and chatted with the royal couple after taking part in a parade to mark the prince’s 70th birthday.
They were dressed as bees and a beekeeper to represent The Soil Association, one of the charities supported by the prince, which invited Okehampton Primary to represent them because of their work on the charity’s Food for Life programme.
Proud teachers Fran Rickwood and Cindy Squire were also invited, and together with a colleague made the children’s eye-catching costumes which apparently got them noticed by the royal couple.
‘It was lovely,’ said Mrs Rickwood. ‘We had heard that we might meet the royals, then it all went quiet and the day before, we heard that they were coming. We were rubbing shoulders with them literally in the pavilion where there was a cream tea afterwards, it was rammed in there.
‘The kids shuffled forward and shook hands and had a little chat with them. We are hoping it will form good memories for the children. The costumes really were a team effort and they all looked great.’
The school has been working hard to embed the ethos of the Food for Life programme into their daily school life, encouraging health food choices, supporting local organic food providers and running regular cooking sessions in school.
