OKEHAMPTON Young Farmers' Club held its 65th anniversary dinner at Okehampton Golf Club last week, at which trophies were presented to various members.
Around 50 people attended the event, which was presided over by president Ruth Maile and which included a delicious meal provided by Valerie Spry. Guest speaker for the evening was Dudley Luxton.
Past chairman Sam Bullingham reported on the year's activities, during which £1,500 was raised for charity through a slave auction. Current chairman James Heard said that almost £200 was raised for Children in Need by a quiz held during November — a bingo evening and tinsel ball had also been very successful. The next fundraising event will be a dung run during February, proceeds to be donated to Dartmoor Rescue Group.
A fun stock judging afternoon is due to be held on February 21 and various visits and speakers are planned for the coming months.
After the meal, a Mr and Mrs Competition was held — John and Maria Cooper were the winners, with Philip and Mandi Heard and Dudley and Fran Luxton also taking part.
Anyone interested in joining Okehampton YFC is welcome to attend any of their meetings — call James Heard on 01837 54575 for more information. Residents interested in purchasing some excellent fertilizer from the dung run should also call James on the above number, or try 07786 066813.
