AN escaped sheep was rescued from possible death or injury when found wandering next to the busy A30 at Sourton thanks to the farming experience of a police officer.

Concerned drivers called 999 and reported the ewe wandering around the slip road onto the main road, presenting a danger to itself and drivers.

West Devon Community Police responded, returning the frightened animal to a field.

Sgt Tom Ottley said: “This was causing a concern by motorists and also a hazard. Even if the sheep was not hit, there could have been some unfortunate consequences.

“A PC from the farming community took charge with her no-nonsense approach. They rounded up the sheep and she firmly man-handled the fully grown ewe into the back seat of the police vehicle.”
