DESPITE the hot temperatures last Sunday more than 150 walkers and dogs turned out to take part in the Leafy Lanes walk to raise money for Derriford Hospital's oncology department.

Walkers were able to do a three, six or eight-mile round walk from the White Hart Inn in Bridestowe along picturesque country lanes.

Event organiser David Hocking said he was delighted with the turnout: 'It was a blazing hot day but we had wonderful support from locals who came along and also people from Saltash and Plymouth joined in. A lot of people who have never been to this area thought the views were stunning.

'At present, we've raised about £1,200 and there's more to come from sponsorship money. It was a lovely day. I was concerned about the heat especially with the children, but everyone made it back to the pub where they enjoyed a meal and a pint.'

The money raised will go to the oncology department for patient positioning — supports for arms, necks and legs when having radiotherapy.

David added: 'The oncology department is having a revamp and funds from events such as this go a long way to treating lots of people.'

David expressed thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a success. He said: 'There are too many people to mention but I am very grateful to the team of volunteers who helped at the Sport Relief event and this one. Thanks to Pam Sizmur, Philip and Sally Berry, Jonathan Whitely and the Rev Geoff Harris.

'I also want to thank the manager of the oncology department, Sue Lamb, for starting the event, and the team of radiographers who joined the walk, to all my sponsors and Bridestowe Parish Council for providing the off-road parking in the sports field.'
