SPEEDWATCH volunteers on Dartmoor have reported that drivers are still driving too fast and not paying attention to the 40mph speed restriction on the remote roads.

Volunteer Gregg Manning said they noticed drivers were still going too fast while out at Postbridge.

‘We were out for 75 minutes and during that time we monitored 56 cars out of which 15 were speeding, two of which were travelling at 59mph. Bearing in mind this is a 40mph road that is just too fast.

‘Even though we had 22 less animal deaths last year and so far this year the number is down I still find it very frustrating that people are still exceeding the speed limit by so much.’

The group will continue to run Speedwatch sessions around the various sites.

Gregg added: ‘As Speedwatch members we are official police volunteers.

‘Whether or not we are effective is always a hard one to prove but the figures do seem to speak for themselves.

‘In 2016 we lost 155 large animals to vehicle collisions and in 2017 we had got that number down to 133.’
