OKEHAMPTON Excelsior Silver Band are inviting people to have a go at playing one of their musical instruments on Sunday (May 12).
There will be brass and percussion instruments to try at the hour-long session from 4.30pm at the Charter Hall.
Band spokesperson Heather Edwards-Entwistle said: ‘This is a free introduction for anyone, aged eight to 108, who would like to try a brass or percussion instrument. Instruments and teachers will be available for an informal introduction to brass banding.’
The session aims to give people a taster of playing with the band, with a view to recruiting new members. There is currently a vacancy for a percussionist.
‘The band does not charge for the use of instruments, music or uniform,’ said Heather. ‘It is a brilliant way to learn to play and make new friends, without emptying your pocket!’
The band is also holding an instrument and uniform amnesty at the event. Any former band members who have instruments, uniform, fleeces and ties lurking in their wardrobes are invited to return them then.
The event will be followed, at 6pm, by the band’s annual charity concert which is this year in aid of the charity Farms for City Children, which runs Nethercott House in Iddesleigh. It was founded by Sir Michael and Lady Clare Morpurgo, who live in the village.
