A CHERITON Bishop pensioner will cycle through Okehampton as part of a mammoth challenge, raising money for blind and disadvantaged children.
Curly Wright set off from John O'Groats last Friday, aiming to reach Land's End on August 18. The team are cycling around 50 miles a day, incorporating a few rest days and parties along the way.
The team, made up of Curly, Mike Beresford, Chris Stanyer and Curly's daughter Gem Spicer, are setting off on the challenge to raise money for the West of England School for children with little or no sight. Along the way, Curly will be accompanied by his seven grandchildren.
Curly said: 'I have in the past raised funds for children's causes, however, this one will give me an enormous amount of pleasure, given that I intend to enjoy the journey.
'Children are born into this world without choice, however, some, sadly, without the equality in health of many. I believe that as responsible adults we have a duty to help and protect all children until they are of an age that they can fend for themselves.
'The children that I am supporting on this occasion not only suffer with little or no vision, but they also have many other underlying health factors to deal with.
'To see the way they smile their way through their problems is extremely gratifying and heart-warming.'
The team will be holding a barbecue lunch at the King's Arms in Okehampton on Thursday August 16 from noon to 2pm, and will be escorted on their way by North Tawton's U16s rugby team. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a fun-filled atmosphere, good food, and to raise money for a worthy cause.
