RESIDENTS, supporters, funders and well wishers joined the trustees and contractors at the new Lifton Community Centre site last Wednesday (May 24) for the official ‘topping out’ ceremony.
On a beautiful sunny morning the final roof tile was signed and placed on the roof as part of the ceremony — a tradition in construction that can be traced back to ancient Scandinavia.
West Devon Borough Councillor Chris Edmonds made a short speech to the assembled community, beginning with a moment’s pause to reflect on the impact of the attack on the community in Manchester earlier in the week.
Cllr Edmonds explained how the new Lifton Community Centre which has received a grant from West Devon Borough Council fitted perfectly with its strategic aims of empowering residents to create strong communities and supporting positive, safe and healthy lifestyles.
Cllr Martin Hall was thanked for his work as an active community centre trustee but also his role in keeping Lifton Parish Council informed of progress.
Congratulations were also given to everyone involved in bringing the project together, particularly; marathon runner Vin Marshall who has pounded the streets of London and shortly Edinburgh, to raise funds, fundraiser, Mandy Kenyon who has successfully obtained grants, and chairman Tony Phillips who has shown drive and commitment to bring the project to fruition.
Building team, Devon Contractors were also complemented on the speed and efficiency of their work.
Many of the guests including representatives from the Big Lottery Fund, Launceston Rotary shop and Cllr Kevin Ball of Devon County Council, donned safety clothing and were given a tour of the construction site. The building, which has been designed by Stephen Whettem Architects of Tavistock in consultation with Lifton residents, includes two meeting rooms and a large sports/ function hall and kitchen.
The guests appreciated the height of the main hall which will be ideal for badminton and other indoor sports as well as the flexibility offered by the two upstairs meeting rooms.
Volunteer, Mandy Kenyon said: ‘It was quite an emotional experience actually going into a building that we have been looking at on paper for so long.’
Cllr Kevin Ball said: ‘It was a privilege to have been able to support this terrific community project. The contractors have done a marvellous job and I can’t wait to see the centre completed and opened for residents to enjoy.’
It is planned that the contractors will be leaving the site in the summer with the centre due to open as a place to enjoy various events, activities and services later in the autumn.
