Launceston U9s 15

Okehampton U9s 5

THE first few minutes saw equal possession and territory, but with Launceston displaying better ball handling skills.

After an Okes' scrum, Daniel Turney ran down the left wing only to be tackled by the opposition near the line but he managed to pass to Will Risdon who powered over the line to open the scoring. Unfortunately Oke could not keep up the pressure and Launceston scored two tries in quick succession.

Dai Chi looked close to scoring for Okehampton after a superb solo run from deep within his own half, only to be denied within inches of the line and being tackled into touch.

Both teams continued to play well, but Launceston's slightly better rucking meant more possession of the ball and resulted in a third try to seal the match.

For the second game, the Okes learnt from their first encounter and began with a quick try from player of the match Nathan Tomkins. He continued to dominate the game with a further five tries in total.

However, he could not have done without the support of all of his team but most noticeably Daniel Turney's relentless tackling and Gareth Crome's support as scrum half.

TWO games were played against Liskeard on Sunday and both were fairly convincing wins for Tavistock.

Although the tackling was very inconsistent, Tavistock played well with John Lord especially having some great runs. Player of the match Olly Noy Scott darted through the Liskeard defence and Jude White showed great positional play to always be on hand to run through with the try.

Tom and Morgan held on to the ball well, and there were some great runs from Jack, with Luke and Jason putting in a number of good tackles.

This was another solid all round team performance with everyone looking forward to the match against Okehampton next week.

LAUNCESTON put up a great fight in the first period with three tries to each team.

The Okes then stepped up the pace in the second period, putting in one of their best performances with every player working hard for one another. James Stevens, James Close, George Cox, Liam Daintree, Jake Laing-Taylor and Matthew Denning all kept the pressure in the All Blacks, forcing turn over ball, which the Okes capitalised on. Ethan Wilds, Cole Pengelly and Charlie Glanville (1) all made some great breaks up field, splitting the All Blacks defence wide open. Daniel Tomkies (2) and Harry Laing-Taylor (3) both had outstanding games carrying out some great tagging play and attacking at every opportunity.

Ben Wharton (2) and Joshua Burgoyne (1) again combined well in attack, making great breaks when Oke were in trouble, to clear their lines.

The player of the day went to David Smith who, after two and a half years of waiting, scored a fine individual try from the halfway line.

Tavistock stepped up a couple of gears in attack and display much improved discipline in defence.

Dogged tagging from a strong line causing several turnover balls thwarted the Lions' attacks. This coupled with some creative phases of passing play created gaps in the Lions defence which were mercilessly punished by the Tavistock team.

The pace and diversity of the runs from supporting players overwhelmed the Lions; Lois Thornton, Noah Berridge, Joe Inman, and Jack Baker wore down the Lions defence to allow tries from James White (3), Harry Edwards, Henry Varndell-Dawes and Tom Gardener (2 each) and one for James Kenyon. There was also good defensive play from Tavistock's Harry Richardson.
