AFTER three days and six rounds of fierce competition, local golfer and member of Okehampton Golf Club, Abby Turner, was crowned the Devon ladies' county champion at Stover, Newton Abbot, last Sunday. The conditions over the weekend were, at times testing but Abby, supported by her father Ben as caddy, not only beat off all opposition in the final two days of matchplay but won the gold medal for having the best gross score over the first 36 holes of the weekend — a first for the Championship. Abby has been selected for the Devon Ladies team squad and will represent the county at the inter-counties match week to be played at Yeovil next month. On May 12 more than a 140 players entered the seniors' three ball spring open competition. The overall winners with 74 points were Rod Jones, Bob Collett and Alan Jones from Okehampton, and second overall was P Evans, K Woolacott and J Kenshole with 73 points from Downes Crediton. First visitor prize went to J Sargent, J Court and D McArdle (Tiverton) with 66 points on the back nine from, in second S Darke, T King and P Williams from Ilfracombe. Best Okehampton prize was awarded to John Leonard, Phil Burley and Allen Deakin with 71 points.
