THE features of a sucessful league Saturday for Chagford first and second teams this week were the two century partnerships by father and son combinations.
In the first team, after the loss of an early wicket, father David Penberthy and son Paul put on a second wicket partnership of 109 runs to set a platform for a Chagford win against Dartington and Totnes first at Chagford.
Batting first, the highly rated Dartington and Totnes opening pair of Australian Brad Mitchell and South African Bertus Loots. set about the Chagford attack and 50 was on the board in just six overs before veteran Steve Sizmur had Loots (21) well caught by Jon Wright. Sizmur went on brilllantly to catch Mitchell off his own bowling for an aggresive 42 and quickly bowling Neil Colegate for a duck.
With the help of a run-out and two wickets by Tim Pitts-Tucker, the visitors were in trouble 97-6. However, Dartington and Totnes captain Harold Stephenson and Joshua Thomas batted confidently and added a chanceless 82 runs before Stephenson departed for 39.
Thomas went on to make 58 and with 14 from Andrew Bligh the South Devon team reached 221-9 in their allotted 45 overs.
Pick of the Chagford attack was Steve Sizmur whose three quick wickets changed the course of the game, and Tim Pitts-Tucker supported him with 3- 45.
In reply Chagford lost Pete Holland (10) with the score at 27 at which David Penberthy joined his son Paul at the crease in an excellent partnership. Paul played aggressively, playing some superb cover drives and taking the attack to the Dartington and Totnes bowlers with even Bertus Loots coming in for heavy punishment.
The pair added 109 to take the score to 136-2 when Paul was out for 81.
Divan Marrris played a typical quickfire innings of 37 before David Penberthy (60 no) and Jon Wright (22no) saw Chagford through to 224-3 to give Chagford a seven wicket victory.and 19 points.
