THE Dartmoor Classic Sportive, organised and promoted by the Mid-Devon Cycling Club. took place at the weekend for the 11th consecutive year.

This immensely popular cycling event, which attracts visitors from around the world, saw approximately 3,000 enthusiastic cyclists taking up the challenge. With its choice of three routes, 35, 68, or 107 miles, the Dartmoor Classic draws both male and female cyclists from as young as 13 years through to some who are well into their 80s.

Participants were also treated with the opportunity to meet and cycle with Dean Downing, former professional cyclist and three times British national champion.

The Dartmoor Classic is popular among local cyclists, many regarding it as their annual ‘festival of cycling‘. This year’s Event Village, at Newton Abbot Racecourse, certainly gave the participants and their families a real festival experience.

It is estimated to bring in around £500,000 to the local economy each year and also helps to raise much needed funds for local charities and community projects. Many of the participants also use this event to raise money for their own chosen charities — including Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (Ashburton).

The event was well supported by the Tavistock Wheelers and Okehampton Cycling Club and included many West Devon triathletes.
