South West Peninsula League Division One East
Okehampton Argyle 5
Plymstock United 1
OKEHAMPTON's new centre forward James Jackson had a dream debut as he netted four goals to give Argyle their first double of the season against a resilient Plymstock side who never gave up.
This was no one-sided affair and Plymstock had the better of the first half in terms of possession, but went in at the interval two down as Argyle showed some clinical finishing.
For the first quarter of an hour, United belied their league position and pushed Argyle back making the home back four of Smith, Wills, Chadwick and Wren work very hard, helped by midfielders Squire and Clarke who put in some good covering work and telling tackles. The defence coped admirably with the pressure and Okes' keeper Craig Mulholland was seldom troubled. Then on 16 minutes, a long through ball went over the top of a square Plymstock back four and Jackson used his tremendous speed to latch onto the ball and cleverly fire past Pethick in the visitors' goal. Back came Plymstock and again Argyle had to absorb pressure, but two minutes before the interval, Argyle put together another incisive move which ended with Luke Alden and Jackson combining well in the box before Jackson fired home powerfully from ten yards.
Nine minutes into the second period, Plymstock shook the home supporters when Aron Hulme seized on an error in the Argyle defence to make no mistake from close in. This marked the start of an uncomfortable ten minutes for Argyle as Plymstock pushed forward for an equaliser but on 64 minutes, Craig Mulholland's long kick caught the visitors' defence too far forward and Jackson timed his run perfectly to race through and fire home from the edge of the box.
Four minutes later, Okehampton put the game to bed when a lovely ball from Dale Chadwick released Luke Alden who skilfully took the ball past Pethick and fired home into an empty net. Okehampton were now in command and with a minute remaining, brilliant work by Alden set up Jackson to fire home his fourth from the edge of the box.
Man of the match was James Jackson, but this was another good squad performance to which everybody contributed.
