DRAGON Taekwondo Academy took a team of six to a major competition in Southampton. The Halwill Junction based Korean martial arts academy was up against several hundred competitors, including some international players. All the Dragons returned with medals but the star of the day was Alice Morey, aged 15 and a first dan black belt, who took silver in the patterns. She also went on to earn gold and silver in the sparring and a further silver medal in the speed breaking. In the junior patterns Ella Rose Petersen (10), a student at Halwill primary school, took part in her very first tournament and came away with bronze while Rowan Power, 12, earned silver in sparring after a close and hard fight, and again, it was won on a golden point. Ellis Wiffen, 14, took gold in patterns and silver in sparring before sustaining an injury to his upper arm which needed medical attention. Tom Douglas, 30, had a bronze in the patterns, a good achievement as he was in a senior dan grade category. Alex Grange, 35, club coach for the day and an assistant instructor, had gold for patterns while Alice Morey earned a gold, two silvers and a bronze. Dragon Taekwondo Academy is run by Niall Grange, a seventh dan Chung do Kwan Taekwondo. For more details call Niall on 01409 221458.
