Exeter University 3

Columbines 4

THE Okehampton ladies’ first team travelled with some anticipation to Exeter in the hope of gaining some points against Exeter University.

The game started off slowly with the Okehampton defenders Abi Colton, Nicola Bennie and Laura Parsons working hard to clear the ball away from goalie Alice Wiseman. Sophie Whiteley tried to feed the ball up the pitch but it was to no avail and the home side were first to add the score board.

Okehampton were spurred on and rewarded through Jo Moppett converting a penalty corner. Whiteley and Jess Medland drove through the middle of the pitch but University got the upper hand and slipped the ball into the goal to make 2-1 to the home team at half time.

After a pep talk from captain Kim Davey, Okehampton came out fighting for more. Excellent passing between Molly Marvin, Hannah Whiteley and Sophia Marshall and then to Moppett, saw the latter pummel the ball into the goal to equalise.

Oke’s Anna Speak made some strong tackles allowing the ball to quickly make its way up the pitch to a waiting Moppett, who again drove the ball into the back of the net.

Okehampton then had a panic when University scored again to make 3-3 and an card for Davey meant the pressure was on with only 10 players on the pitch.

With seconds to go, Davey made a reappearance and made a perfect slip to a waiting Moppett, who calmly hammered the ball home, pulling a win out of the bag and picking up those precious points in the dying seconds.
