THE West Devon Primary Schools annual Quad Kids championships took place on the track at Tavistock College. This is always a popular event with the children and this year was no exception.
Seventeen teams from 10 schools took part in the 75 metre sprint, standing long jump, vortex throw and 600m run. The best eight out of 10 athletes’ scores counted towards the teams’ final points.
The fastest sprinter of the day was Nicolas Maczugowski of St Peter’s who also went on to jump the furthest and achieve the fastest time in the 600m. Logan Sulch, his team mate won the vortex throw.
The fastest girl was Lily Hilton of Horrabridge, Beatrice Kinnear of St Peter’s cleared 2.05m to win the standing long jump, Niamh Petch of Tavistock won the vortex and Hope Rogers of Whitchurch had the quickest time in the 600m.
Individual medal winners were – boy, 1, Maczugowski 269 points, 2, Sheldon Higgins (Whitchurch) 239pts, 3, Logan Sulch and William Harvey (St Andrew’s) 232pts; 1, Beatrice Kinnear 196pts, equal girl Tess Hopes and Ellie Reeve (Okehampton) 189pts.
Top teams – 1, St Peter’s A, 1,656 points; 2, St Andrew’s A, 1,503 pts; 3, Okehampton 1,482 pts; 4, Tavistock 1,443pts; 5, Horrabridge A, 1,432pts.
Mhairi McCall of OCRA expressed her thanks to the hard working young sports leaders from Tavistock College who assisted with the raking, recording and retrieving on the day, to volunteers from TAC and the primary schools who led the throwing and jumping events and to Keith and Jayne Reed from Devon Athletics Association who helped OCRA employees to officiate over the event.
St Peter’s go through to the School Games County finals at Brickfields, Plymouth on June 20.
