Chagford, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Whitchurch, Bridestowe, Horrabridge, Oke-hampton, South Tawton and St Andrew’s schools played for the honour of representing West Devon in the School Games’ county finals.
Pool one was extremely tight with Whitchurch, Chagford and Bridestowe all winning two games and losing one. It went to tries scored to decide the placings and Chagford came top with 24; next was Bridestowe with 18 and Whitchurch with 17.
Pool two also had a draw at the top, between St Andrew’s and South Tawton which was again decided on tries scored. South Tawton came out on top with 26 to St Andrew’s 20.
Then came the play-offs. Horrabridge beat Okehampton for seventh and eighth place. Whitchurch beat Mary Tavy and Brentor for fifth and sixth place. Bridestowe beat St Andrew’s for third place.
The final was a replay of the South Zeal competition, South Tawton v Chagford, with South Tawton coming out on top this time by nine tries to eight. South Tawton will be invited to represent West Devon at the School Games at Brickfields, Plymouth on June 20.
Mhairi McCall of OCRA thanked Wayne Reed of the RFU for attending and reminding the players, teachers and parents of the core values of rugby and officiating over games.
