Times Sport editor John Hutchins offers his personal opinion on the events, topics and personalities in the world of sport.
IT was great for me last week to read of all the wonderful success by West Devon’s sporting teams and individuals in last week’s Times Sport.
Tavistock AFC are worthy league champions this season in the South West Peninsula League premier and have been in a tremendous run of form. As regulars readers know I’m a Plymouth Argyle supporter but even I, having seen them play this season, admit they have not always won with style and I am more than satisfied with a promotion spot.
The Lambs, on the other hand, have thoroughly deserved to be champions as they had consistently played attacking football — as their 138 goals for and 38 against this season has testified.
Tavistock’s success has been hard earned. Only a few seasons ago they were relegated from that league but thanks to hard work by many at Langsford Park their fortunes have been transformed. The management, the squad and all those who have supported them rightly deserved their moment to savour.
Okehampton Rugby Club first team also put in a brave effort in the Devon Knockout Cup final. They lost out 35-20 to favourites Brixham but what a fight they put up. It was a tremendous effort by South West one team, the Okes, against a side who play in the higher National League three.
Like the Lambs, the Okes have put in great work ‘on and off’ the field and their endeavours are beginning to reap the rewards.
There are many examples of sporting success we have here in West Devon — too many to extol in the space available.
